So, what do these two objects have in common? Yes, they’re both ceramic animals. And, yes, they are both quite bizarre-looking and appear to have no practical use whatsoever – except perhaps as paperweights.
They are, in fact, bingo trophies. Yes. I won these two oddities at Halloween bingo night hosted by Mississippi Pizza in North Portland. Great pizza, great atmosphere, and throng of costumed patrons clamoring for a rousing round of bingo… and bourbon. Me? I was just there to have a good time with friends from work.
My group was one of the few who apparently missed the memo that this was Halloween Bingo. Among those attending, we saw catwoman, a horde of scurvy pirates, lawn gnomes… even Han Solo and Princess Leia made an appearance. The guy reading the numbers at the front was dressed as the caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland. His name was Brian. Nice guy. We all got a group picture with him before we left.
I’ve admit I was a bit uncomfortable when I first arrived there. Heck, going anywhere downtown Portland makes me tense in one way or another – yet there is something strangely endearing about the city’s famed weirdness. I’m glad I decided to go.
To quote one of my coworkers, “Who wouldn’t want to go home with a strange ceramic animal?”
God bless, and good night!
