Drainpipes and Early Mornings

So … I have a new alarm clock. For the last two weeks or so, at 6 AM sharp, I get to wake up to what sounds like someone firing a machine gun outside my window. In reality, its just a deranged woodpecker vigorously clanging away on a nearby drainpipe. Why? The manager of the apartment complex seems to think the bird is attempting to attract a mate. If so, he must be desperate.

Anyway, one early morning, I went outside to see if I could catch a glimpse of this tenacious avian bachelor. No luck. Instead, I saw a squirrel in the tree right in front of my balcony. He was chirping like crazy and didn’t seem to mind my proximity, so I grabbed my camera and took a few shots.

As I was taking these pictures, my frustration with the woodpecker subsided. I was reminded of just peaceful the world can be at 6 AM. For those of you who like to sleep in like me, I encourage you to get up early every now and then. Take a walk. Observe your surroundings. Take in the peacefulness that precedes the business of the day.
I can assure you it’s worth missing that extra hour in bed, even if it takes deranged woodpecker to get you up!
God bless!
