Bran Muffins!

January 27, 2012 hawkinsd Blog

← A Pleasant Surprise Blueberry Muffins! →

…because I said I would – but mostly because tonight’s Bible study was canceled at the last minute, and my streak of missing the small group meeting continues. This time due to reasons beyond my control.

So, what does one do when suddenly faced with an entire evening of unexpected free time? Outside of the bran muffins, I had no idea. Thankfully, a friend of mine sent me a message requesting some help with writing a paper. Perfect! Something fun and potentially helpful.

Not many people know this, but I secretly enjoy editing other people’s writing. Not my own, mind you. I can’t stand editing my own writing. I do enough of it whilst writing these blog posts to drive myself crazy. It’s not to say that I don’t enjoy writing, because I do. It’s just that sometimes I get so caught up in wordsmithing that I start getting irritated with myself. But I digress…

Editing other people’s writing is fun for three reasons. One, it makes me feel helpful. It just feels good to help people, especially when they end up being better off after ward. Secondly, it’s like a puzzle. I get a distinct feeling of accomplishment when I find a solution to an awkward flow or a run-on sentence. Lastly, I get to read cool stuff! People write some fascinating things, and editing forces you to really think about what they’re trying to say. And I guess there is one more reason why editing is so great:

You’re not the one writing the darn paper.

Still, writing can be fun, too. I wouldn’t be writing this now if I didn’t believe it.

It looks like the bran muffins are almost cool enough to eat now, so I’m going to wrap up here for tonight. As for a quote, here’s one I keep on my computer’s dashboard. It’s served as a comfort for me in times of stress:

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”~Philippians 4:6-7

God bless and good night!

-Daniel
